The Kemptown Verses

By JJ Leahy

To Affinity & BeBlonde

Scherzando

Like a machine head bastard, I was so gullible to enlist
Made a deal with the devil – he’s my psychoanalysis;

I offer you passive resistance in an active state of mind
You’re bad, I’m indifferent, so we are two of a kind?

Call me an ardent cynic but I do what I can
Like a neurotic suburban version of Desperate Dan,
And I pose a risqué statue – of the perfect male
So don’t strangle our love, with excessive detail.

Hope springs eternal, I was told that to say
But crushed by anxiety – so I’ll just live for today.

I penned an ode to a she, said I can’t stop thinking
Use your mind and body or try lateral winking;

Loves depression looms, it’s like a shipbuilding crane
For the unknown value – of that girl on the train.

Are you a play thing, a pure reason of critique
Or are you a bright spark – like a modern antique?
A smell so elegant, acknowledges foreplay a farce
It’s all in the eyes, like the House of Commons pass.

Please don’t push your options, for I need my room
I clutch to simple ideology, well cogito ergo sum.

While living on credit and flying across oceans
I did a secret autopsy, exposed my most fragile emotions;

Now pay no attention to life’s laws and bloody rules
Pay no homage to the nobodies – the incessant fools!

For my sabbatical of therapy, has ended in tragedy
I’m an i.c.1 male, sabotaged by wine and apathy,
Like stereotypical victims with psychological scars
Spend far too much time, sitting in pub bars.

Now watch out for predators or an inevitable accident
An uncomfortable aspect of life – in the Occident,

So I struggle with ideals, of ethics and beyond
Got arrested for stalking – a chemical blonde.
But I’m a high flyer, on psychiatric wings
I’m a gang of one; I am many strange things.
