The Kemptown Verses

By JJ Leahy

Genus Rattus

Sardonic
1950s
A dynamic career, then pray to God
Or try idyllic profession for an idle sod;
Company version of the grim reaper
For the job is known, as the Time Keeper.

1960s
Turn work ideals into a daily farce
Spend long hours dozing on ones arse;
So little to do, go out for a stroll
The new title is, Company Payroll.

1970s
Remembrances of activities somewhat hazy
Because they’re dedicated – to being lazy;
Persecute poor people, condemned as to hell
Change the name, to Personnel.

1980s
With such a vocation, needs not be smart
Turn a waste of space, into an art;
Have a long tea breaks or bet on the horses
The department becomes, Human Resources.

1990s
All that belches plus corporate leaches
Some of the company’s most ineffectual creatures,
Hand out petty warnings like an office Kaiser
Upgrade the name – Employment Partner Advisor.

2000s
Some you like, they get hired
As for freethinkers, well they get fired;
With yet another new title ever exultant
The position is now, Rewards Consultant.

From clock cards, to blackberries devices
Same occupation, for situations in crisis.
More genus rattus than rat race
Time to don that angry company face;
Ignorance in abundance, is regrettably not a crime
So do something useful, check the wages on time.
