The Kemptown Verses

A Life Worth Living

Marcia Moderato

Tell me about the man Brian Haw
What he did and what he saw,

Sitting in his tent, with placards all around
He made a home on politics’ muddy ground;

Demanding the cabinet, scrap Imperialist plans
Stop war planes bombing – foreign lands.

It was common place to pause and stair
At the peace protester in Parliament Square,

Cars would honk, people would wave
Appreciating that there, were lives to save.

For Brain had – an honest cause
To stop the carnage, to stop the wars;

With tatty hat – upon his head
People paid attention, as to what he said

He would see the MPs as they come and go,
Brian stood firm through the rain and the snow

A welcoming light, against the discord of war
What this man was, the world it needs more.

The police would arrest him from time to time
Standing up for peace, is apparently a crime?

He was a living question, of what we should ask
Stand tall against conflict – take Governments to task.

A good example of what we all could be
To fight for a cause, against global stupidity.

No more is his encampment on Parliament soil
For Brain has left, this mortal coil.

Oh! Blessed joy, the time spent giving
Yes indeed, A live worth living.
